Chengdu Delegation Went to Dublin to Bid for the Worldcon

      On August 16th, local time, Chengdu delegation announced formally to bid for the 81st World Science Fiction Conference in 2023 at the 77th worldcon.

      Founded in 1939, the World Science Fiction Conference is the world's largest and most influential sci-fi event. This year, the worldcon was held in Dublin, Ireland. Through a series of activities such as bidding salon, setting up bidding booth, delivering campaign speeches and answering questions, Chengdu bidding work group fully demonstrated the profound historical and cultural heritage and Chengdu’s science fiction culture, and other necessary conditions for hosting the worldcon such as the cultural and tourist condition, traffic condition, and exhibition condition. These activities further reaffirm Chengdu’s intention of bidding for worldcon and its full-preparation. The China Association for Science and Technology, Sichuan Association for Science and Technology, and other domestic sci-fi institutions and experts are at the scene and cheered for the bidding.

      In the inquisition part, Chengdu bidding work group demonstrated Chengdu’s determination to bid worldcon and introduced Chengdu and reported phased achievements of the bidding, At Chengdu's bidding salon, the delegation and the Dublin World Science Fiction Conference Chairman James Bacon, the Chairman of the Advisory Board, Ben Yalow, and other national sci-fi representatives has discussed the bidding deeply. Liu Xingjun, deputy secretary general of the Chengdu Municipal Government, delivered a speech and introduced the history, culture, economy, transportation and tourism of Chengdu. He pointed out that Chengdu is known as China's "science and technology capital". In recent years, Chengdu endeavor to develop the science fiction culture industry. And by holding sci-fi exchanges activities and setting out science fiction industry support policies, etc, Chengdu is trying to create a science fiction industry area and an international platform." He invited national sci-fi representatives to offer advice for Chengdu, support Chengdu’s bid to host the 81st World Science Fiction Conference, and vote for Chengdu. Jing Ge, vice chairman of the Sichuan Association of Science and Technology and president of the Sichuan Science Fiction Society, said that for the Chinese science fiction community, the dream has always been to hope that the World Science Fiction Conference can be held in China. He invited sci-fi writers and sci-fi fans from all over the world to participate in the 5th China (Chengdu) International Science Fiction Conference which is held in Chengdu from November 22nd to 24th this year.

      It is reported that the cities currently campaign with Chengdu for the 81st Worldcon are Nice, France and Memphis, USA. The final result of the 81st Worldcon in 2023 will be voted by the delegates from all over the world at the 79th Worldcon held in Washington in 2021.
